Young Justice: "Coldhearted" Review

ColdheartedWith episodes that already spotlighted Superboy, Aqualad, Artemis and even Red Arrow this past week’s episode of Young Justice puts the spotlight on the team’s speedster, Kid Flash. Taking place on Wally West’s 16th birthday, he is disappointed about not joining in on the team-up mission between Justice League and The Team (aka The Team). Instead Wally got assigned a solo mission that turned out to be much more important than he initially thought.

After a drama heavy episode that left us on a somber note it was nice to get an episode that was somewhat lighter but still pushed the overarching plot of the series forward. Though Wally has been able display his powers throughout every mission this episode really placed an importance on the characters unique set of powers. It also tested his personality of being the jokester that is out to prove himself.

The set up for Wally’s character to have a full story arc within this episode was done well. Starting out with the character being excited about his teammates throwing him a party to being the final one to find out Superboy and Miss Martian were in a relationship it was all here. It was all done to have him get some much need time in the spotlight and give him some character development.

The writers did a nice job making sure that the mission was something that highlighted Wally’s abilities and personality. Having Vandal Savage play the part of the roadblock was a bit unexpected but gave us a good look at how Wally fights by himself. Seeing how he wanted to prove himself as a hero that is more than a sidekick was a good way to push his story arc further. The Kid Flash vs. Vandal Savage fight helped to remind Kid Flash what is important.

The ending with Kid Flash and Count Vertigo was great. It threw us a nice swerve that gave Vertigo some importance and again showed how much a true hero Kid Flash was. Now I just wonder how this will affect The Light’s plan since Vertigo was part of the group and his takeover of his country was to play a part in the organization’s plan. It is actually the first time The Light fails to get something out of their plot.

Though not given as much time, the episode did give us some cool Brave and the Bold moments with how we got to see Robin and Aqualad team-up with Batman and Aquaman as well as Artemis teaming-up with Green Arrow. It gave us a nice look at how but mentors and sidekicks fight with one another in combat.

There was also some furthering of the Robin/Zatanna relationship at the beginning. I like the slow burn approach the writers are taking with the two since they are the youngest on the team and Zatanna just went through a lot.

Overall “Coldhearted” provided some great character development for Kid Flash. It also gave us some cool moments with the first team-up between the Justice League and The Team.

So now that Kid Flash has had his spotlight episode I wonder when we will see Miss Martian and Robin get their own episodes since they are the only ones on the team that haven’t gotten one yet. Also when will we see The Team finally get an official name?
