I disagree with your Thoreau comment. I have read Thoreau and I don't think that quoting him necessarily means you have to go live in the wild. Yes, he supported that idea, but I don't think that it was his main contribution.

I think JMS was - in his own preachy way - going for a "stand up to what is wrong" kind of speech. In another writer's hands it would have been an interesting premise; Superman is always there to help people, but what if the people want him to do EVERYTHING for them? Kind of like the woman with her dead husband from 700.

I think Barrows botched up the art in many a place, making the already overdramatic story even more dramatic; the scene with the Thoreau speech with Supes and that guy holding their chins in contemplative poses is laughable.
