Reader Question: Horror Sequels or Remakes?

Share

Nigthmare RemakeGreetings ghouls, goblins and ghosts! As the Halloween Season continues on we are here to talk about yet another Halloween themed question for you all! What can it be this time? Well, grab your crucifix and step into my crypt and see what horrors await your minds for answers this time!

This question is all personal opinion on the matter. But, before I get to it I think I should give some exposition for the recent trends in horror films.

In the 1980's and 1990's it was pretty much all about sequels to slasher flicks. You could not blink without a new Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween or Friday the 13th sequel. But, as the years have gone by that has changed and now we are getting tons of remakes. Remakes of classic horror like Dracula and the Wolf Man, to more modern horror like Halloween and Friday the 13th.

There are some new horror films here and there like Trick 'R Treat, but really not much has seem to stuck.  Therefore, studios have instead decided to milk these old dying cash-cows once again by remaking everything. It started with Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the most recent was Nightmare on Elm Street.

The question from this point is simple, which do you prefer: Sequels or remakes?

I can take a bad sequel like Predators, it does not ruin the original for me. I can still look forward to the next sequel even if Predators 4 is bad.  But, if Predators were a remake of Predator then I would hate it a lot more.

Me? I prefer Sequels all the way. I cannot stand these remakes. Other then the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I have absolutely hated these remakes. Especially the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. I could rant all day about how awful that was.

But, in the end, that is my opinion. I can see why people would prefer the remakes over the sequels or the sequels over the remakes.

So what do you all think? Let us know in the comment section below. Congratulations on surviving this round of horrors. Well, which few of you that DID survive!

It is all about the remake, but only the good ones. The Thing, The Fly. These are true remakes. Most are garbage, but so are most sequels. There are no sequels better than the originals, the only ones that come close are Friday the 13th Part 2, Army of Darkness, and New Nightmare. The rest are usually slowly losing fidelity with each copy.

I personally cannot stand remakes. They are mostly awful. I saw the new Nightmare and it completely sucked. Like seriously. I would say I prefer sequels, but looking at some sequels of horror series I would say that they are not that great either. The Friday the 13th films were all dumb, even the sequels. Now Nightmare 3 was good and I even liked Predators, but for the most part, sequels arent that great. I'd say if I had to I'd prefer sequels, but I would really prefer getting someone who knows how to take an idea and do something with it that is more interesting than it was portrayed in the first film.

I agree with Steven on that last point. I can't really say which is better, sequel or remake, because they vary (although most suck now.) But according to the numbers, sequels have it in my opinion. The thing about remakes is that writers and directors try modernize them. They don't understand that the settings and characters have to be modernized not the concept. Most horror concepts are solid because you can't really fix something that still works. People think it's all about gore and bloody shock factors when it's not. That's where remakes fail. Sequels try to do this as well sometimes, but at least we know X movie # 3 will try to go back to the roots after # 2 fails with its new direction.

How about none of the above? Both sequels and remakes have been done and redone and overdone. And it's not like Hollywood has somehow lost their creativity... look at the way they hide their money! So they need to put some of that creativity to better use.

For me, I like either of them. The only thing I dislike about remakes is that sometimes I feel like there's still plenty of stories that could be told in the original series. How likely is it that we'll go back to the original Nightmares with Robert Englund, or the original Friday the 13th series now that we have the new one? I have to say I did enjoy the Friday the 13th remake (I haven't seen the Nightmare on Elm Street one yet). Also, it was the remake of The Ring that got me into Japanese horror films (mainly, I wanted to see what the original film was like).
