Back Features Andrenn Comic Book Highlights of the Week 8/24/11

Comic Book Highlights of the Week 8/24/11

Share

While the Kevin is away the Andrenn will play. Once again Kevin can't do the Highlights of the Week so he's entrusted me with keeping the torch going bright as ever. I've got the torch lit and its time to start running. Lets just hope I don't burn the place down by the end of the day.

Action Comics #904

Action904moment

D'aaaaaw what a nice send off to the Lois/Clark marriage. While I may not have really cared much about them being married, it goes to show that good writers could do good things with them like here. Now I am kind of sad that it's ending. Only kind of though. At least Lois isn't dating the stereotypical D-bag boyfriend that so many other stories do. Am I right? Haha, that would be stupid.

OH WAIT.

American Vampire #18

AmericanVamp18moment1

WAIT WHAT. Did that just happen? I...that didn't just happen, right? I'm dreaming or something. Right? That...can they do that? They can't do that can they? I gotta call Scott Snyder and yell at him for a few hours. Be right back. Though in all seriousness, this is a huge death that had my jaw flying off. Death rarely shocks me in comics so its awesome when a great series like this can do that.

AmericanVamp18moment2

Man I love those 3 panels. The way they're drawn looks amazing, the way the Taipan Vampires move like a living shadow in the water and as we see the heroes narrowly escape, its a great scene where the art pulls it off perfectly.

Astonishing X-men #41

AstonishingX41Moment

Nothing to really say about any moments from this issue really. Just wanted to mention Nick Bradshaw's artwork, he's awesome. Kind of like Art Adams if a little unrefined in some areas. I admit I wasn't a fan earlier but he really won me over with his work here.

Batman, Inc #8

BatmanInc8moment

Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on in this book? The artwork is so terrible it just strains my eyes to try and read any of these pages.

Batman: Arkham City #5

 BatmanArkhamCity5moment1

Wow this is definitely a video game comic. I can't wait for Arkham City now that I know Duke Nukem is going to be in it! Always beat on the Du-wait what? That's Tim Drake? Seriously? I just...seriously?

Batman: Gates of Gotham #5

BatmanGatesofGotham5moment2 A really great scene between 2 adopted siblings. So glad that they brought Cassandra back for one last hurrah. I never really got to read much about her, she had one last mini as Batgirl just as I was getting into DC again and soon after she vanished. Here's to hoping the Black Bat Returns.

BatmanGatesofGotham5moment

Bruce Wayne just acknowledged that Dick Grayson will become a better Batman than him. That's just plain awesome. I know a lot of people (Rokk) are happy that Dick will no longer wear the cape and cowl but I think his time as Batman was great. While its sad to see him return to his old digs, I can't help but hope that this isn't the last time Dick Grayson will become Gotham's Dark Knight.

Batman: The Dark Knight #5

 BatmanDarkKnight5moment

What in the chocolate covered Hell am I looking at here? You're sure this is a Batman book? I think HP Lovecraft would stop and call this a bit too much.

Brightest Day Aftermath: Search for the Swamp Thing #3

BDSearchforSwampThing3moment

So this Mini wasn't anything spectacular, but it was a nice lead in to Snyder's run. This scene with Alec saying he wants to be alive instead of becoming Swamp Thing again was nicely done. Can't wait to see what Snyder does from here.

Flashpoint: Project Superman #3

FpointProjectSuperman3moment

So Flashpoint Lois is dead. The world mourns her loss by remembering she'll be back in a couple of weeks anyway and with a sexy D-bag boyfriend we can all love to hate. Hooray! I mean sad, very sad...

Gladstone's World for School Conquerers #4

Gladstones4moment1

Of course I had to Highlight at least one Image comic! Come on, its me! I just had to! At least I picked one of their best new comics. On a side note this is a nice little scene talking about the legitimacy of comics. Is it a bit too self referential? Sure. Stuff like this always is. But its a nice scene regardless.

Gladstones4moment2

Here's the reason I tweeted a few weeks back that this is the most adorable Super Villain Comic Ever. Which it totally is, I mean come on, that's just adorable and cute packaged together in one sweet box. Its simple but it may be my favorite scene from this excellent series so far. Mostly because the characters are so much fun that seeing them have a moment like this makes me happy as a reader. So are you reading this comic yet? No? You've got 10 seconds to fix that before the time bomb in your stomach goes off. Get to it!

Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #13

GLEmerladWarriors13moment

A little over a year ago Kevin asked for me to fill in on a Highlights of the Week, that week was the week this series debuted. This is the final issue and with it comes a fun story that's got Batman and Guy Gardner, world's bestest bros, teaming up. The issue is just all right, nothing to really celebrate but its well worth it for that final page. Lets hope Guy make a stop by Tomasi's Batman and Robin sometime soon. Also one punch, 'nuff said.

Superman Beyond #0

SupermanBeyond0moment

This one-shot was pretty cool. Nothing spectacular but as far as introducing Superman to the world of Batman Beyond and showing what his place is, it does its job well along with some great artwork by Ron Frenz. Thankfully they held back and didn't over do it with Batman Beyond, this scene and an earlier scene being the only Batman stuff to happen. This was also a great scene to end it on as 2 old friends reconnect. Can't help but hope Superman shows up in the Batman Beyond reboot.

Teen Titans #100

TeenTitans100moment1

Okay lets be honest, who bought this issue just to see Superboy Prime get the crap beaten out of him? No? Was it just me?

TeenTitans100moment2

OUCH, Conner. I guess Rose will be having a hard time dating you if she's got to worry about stabbing you with Kryptonite. How about you call her fat while you're at it? Girls love being called fat.

TeenTitans100moment3

While Superboy may be ruining his chances at love, Changeling and Raven finally got together! Only took 100 damn issues! Hooray! I really look forward to seeing where their relationship goes from this point on-(DCU NEW 52)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1

TMNT1moment

I haven't gotten a chance to read this comic yet but I'm hearing lots of good things. That's great, I'll definitely be checking out the collection. With this reboot tying April to the Turtles more seems like a good idea. Now lets just get her in that yellow jump suit.

PS Leonardo is the best Turtle.

Wolverine #14

Wolvie14moment

So 14 issues all lead up to Wolverine killing his bastard offspring because of a bunch of people he screwed over. While this isn't a terrible twist or idea for a storyline, Its not one worth waiting 14 issues. Aaron's Wolverine has become sub-par at best. Maybe there will be some interesting stuff following this but with Regenesis and the fact that Logan is on a billion teams, Aaron doesn't have the room to do anything new or exciting.

Wonder Woman #614

WonderWoman614moment2

Yet another solid send off for what will now be the Old DCU. Diana gets back to Themyscera, the one we're all familiar with one last adios to her mother and the DCU, flying off into the new DCU where she has to take her pants back off.
